Psalms On Saturday ~ Psalm 29

If I think of one Hollywood voice, it would be James Earl Jones.

Psalm 29 describes the voice of God . . .

The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters (v. 3, ESV).

I imagine the Lord’s voice is more impressive than James Earl Jones’s with Darth Vadar!

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon (v. 5, ESV).

King David wrote Psalm 29. David was a shepherd before he became king, and he used illustrations from nature to describe God’s voice . . .

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness (vv. 7-8, ESV).

When I consider the Lord’s voice, I wonder how He speaks. God doesn’t have a mouth and vocal cords, and yet the Bible describes people hearing God’s voice.

I have a theory.

God speaks, and every cell in our bodies hears His voice. That’s how He shatters the cedars of Lebanon, too. His undampened voice destroys disbelief, hidden sin, denial, and pride.

If God fully speaks — nothing in nature can stand! I want to hear God’s voice, but it frightens me.

The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks and strips the forests bare. In his Temple everyone shouts, “Glory!” (v. 9, NLT).

King David says  . . .

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness (vv. 1-2, ESV).

When we hear God’s voice, we understand His glory.

God’s glory is majesty, holiness, and truth, but because of the blood of Jesus mixed with grace and mercy — the powerful voice of God becomes softer in the New Covenant.

We find a shepherd’s voice of God in the books of the New Testament. As Jesus says . . .

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me (John 10:27, ESV).

I’ve written in Interruptions several times that “If we quiet our anger, fear, and anxiety and listen, the voice of God will be loudest in our spirit.”

I love reading about the voice of God in Psalm 29, but I listen for God to speak to me daily. God’s voice has judgment, power, truth, and peace for those who listen and obey.

David concludes Psalm 29 with this encouragement . . .

The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace (v. 11, NLT).

What is Jesus saying to us today?
