Prayer for Self-Healing

Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication (Ephesians 6:18, ESV).

When I was in my thirties, I was having a lot of pain in one area of my body.

While driving one afternoon and discussing the situation with God, He said to me, “Why don’t you command the pain to go away?” I did, and the pain went away.

Through the years, pain has come back to this area. I again command it to go away, and it does. We can pray for self-healing. With age, I’ve had more and more experiences praying for my aches and pains!

Below are four techniques that I have learned in praying for my own healing.

  1. I pray in the Spirit.

Building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit (Jude 20).

You might find the next sentence troubling. I speak in tongues, and my vocabulary of tongues-speaking is a repetitive five-word phrase. I have no idea of their interpretation, but I received these five words when I became a Christian.

I’ve always prayed these five words, even when I went through a phase in my theological thinking of not believing that the gift of tongues exists today. (I know this sounds irrational.)

Now, when I speak these five words against a problem, for wisdom, or for a request — my prayers are often answered.

  1. I pray specifically for my physical body.

For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord (Jeremiah 30:17).

Through the years, when an ache or a pain arises, I pray for that area with my five-word speaking in tongues phrase.

I’ve prayed for my back, knees, ankles, hands, and pretty much every part of my body through the years. And the pain goes away most of the time.

  1. I pray out loud.

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim) (Romans 10:8).

I find spoken prayers have more impact. It’s one reason we should have a prayer closet or someplace where others can’t hear us.

Charles Spurgeon once said, “Whether we like it or not, asking is the rule of the Kingdom.” So, I ask without hindrance, learning about praying and using differing techniques of prayer. No matter how seemingly ridiculous!

We should seek new ways of asking to increase our faith.

  1. I do a prayer de-tox of my body once a week.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits — Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases (Psalm 103:2-4).

I use my five-word prayer language and pray out loud over my entire body — from head to toe. I also ask for the restoration of joints and ligaments, for unknown diseases to be healed, and for God’s shalom peace in my entire body.

Fasting and detoxing diets are popular today. Why not chase away our infirmities through spoken prayer?

That’s it — four things that I’ve learned and practiced with self-healing. I hope that you find relief from your physical pain. Unleash the Spirit first, then if pain persists, go see a doctor!

If anyone questions your sanity, blame it on me.
