Psalm 93 is a short but powerful psalm — five verses on renewing faith.
Verse 1…
The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure (NIV).
Our world is shaken. What we considered to be normal is now abnormal. What we trusted in is found untrustworthy. Where we found security isn’t secure.
What do we do?
We can dwell in frustration allowing discouragement to become despair that eats our hope.
Or we can take a few minutes and cast our anxieties upon the Lord, asking Him for supernatural faith to know that in Christ, our world is firm and secure.
Verse 2…
Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity.
When I discuss tragedy with others, their pain is in the moment, but their hope must be in God. The tricky part of being a pastor with others’ immediate needs is helping them place their pain in the perspective of eternity.
I never want to short-circuit grieving, but when we stand in faith that God knows all things from His timeless will, we know that He has already worked our trials for good.
We then find peace.
Verses 3 and 4…
The seas have lifted up, Lord, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea – the Lord on high is mighty.
The Jewish people were not seafarers. Often when “seas” are mentioned in the Psalms, like Psalm 107:29, “He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed”… the references to the “seas” indicate fear or distress.
As the Israelites had to face their great fear of the sea to mature, we will also confront any nemesis to our faith. Then we will know that we can do all things through Him who strengthens us.
Verse 5…
Your statutes, Lord, stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days (NIV).
There’s no faith without God’s statutes or Word. As the Apostle Paul says, “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (Romans 10:17, NIV).
It’s fitting that a Psalm on renewing faith ends with God’s statutes.
Our faith grows in direct proportion to our obedience to His daily messages to us. From eternity God knows our future trials and will prepare us today — by growing our faith — to find victory tomorrow.
