And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword’ (Revelation 2:12, ESV).

This is the third of seven letters to individual churches in the Book of Revelation. You can see Pergamum on this map, noting that all seven churches were on an ancient postal system.
The focal point of this letter is a two-edged sword.
We know from this letter and other references that the Word of God is not only a sword but a double-edged sword. In the Apostle Paul’s description of our spiritual armor, he says, “and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” (Ephesians 6:17), while the author of Hebrews writes…
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12).
In the first century, a typical Roman soldier carried a double-edged sword called a gladius.
If you click “gladius,” the link will take you to a historical overview of the sword written by my AI assistant Alice. As she writes, “The blade was sharpened on both sides, allowing soldiers to cut, slice, and thrust.” In confined spaces — like in a street or battle formation — a long one-sided sword could be a hindrance as it required space to arc for effectiveness.
The Word of Christ can bring immediate impact. As Paul says to Timothy, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16, NASB1995). And this sword was needed in Pergamum because of false teaching from Balaam and the Nicolaitans.
We know that Balaam, after being prevented from cursing Israel, told their enemies to entice the Jews with pagan practices, causing them to lose God’s favor. The teaching of the Nicolaitans could have originated with one of the seven original deacons chosen in Acts 6:1-6, who supposedly taught believers a new, secret, and more effective gospel.
One commentator writes concerning these two errors…
They claimed that they were not demeaning Christianity, but that they were presenting an improved and modernized version of it. This is the insidious fifth column, destroying from within.
Within the church today, theology exists that both affirms the Bible’s inspirational value and rejects its divine inspiration. Other Bible teachers believe that the Bible should be interpreted progressively, with issues of justice (or their idea of justice) as the preeminent virtue, thus eliminating Biblical marriage and approving abortion as a more “loving” gospel.

I stand with Jesus on these matters when He says, “Therefore, repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth” (Revelation 2:16, ESV).
Those of us who allow this double-edged sword to reveal truth while cutting away deception will be blessed with…
To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it (Revelation 2:17).
Hidden manna means spiritual maturity, and a white stone with a new name indicates a renewed life or identity in Christ. How will the double-edged sword cut in our lives today?
Come quickly Lord Jesus!
