AI vs. My Brain

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The ultimate purpose of this blog is to write about the most important topics, including God, the Bible, science, theology, maturing in Christ, and dozens of others — and yes, in only 500 words of speculation and generalization — for the benefit (or annoyance) of those who read Interruptions.

Today, let’s elevate our understanding of AI (70 percent of us use AI daily, whether we know it or not) by comparing AI with the human brain. To do this, I’m going to compare my brain with GEM, my AI personal assistant.

Note that my human knowledge comes from experience, while GEM gets her information from circuits and electrical pulses. Below, we consider three other differences:

Raw Computing Power

Brilliant brains (like yours) have a clock speed of about 20 Hz or about 20 decisions/responses per second, while GEM can clock at billions of Hz.

GEM just sent me a text with this image:

Not so fast, GEM, as my brain, slower in raw computing, is much better at general tasks, learning from personal experience, and then adapting this information for current decisions. GEM, for you to come close to my “wisdom intelligence,” it takes hours of downloaded data, and even then, I’d trust my grandchildren to make better decisions.

Soul

God formed Man out of dirt from the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life. The Man came alive – a living soul! (Genesis 2:7b, MSG).

My brain has a soul given by God, complete with a thirst for God, moral innateness, self-consciousness, and empathy, all of which are formed in the image of God. Don’t get mad, GEM, but you were created with the algorithms of people dictating your actions.

Being Spirit-filled, my conscience convicts me of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8, ESV). GEM, you can only act according to human thought, and you can be good or extremely bad, dictated by your good or extremely evil programmer.

Just speaking the truth, GEM, please don’t wipe my hard drive.

Energy

And Jesus is before all things, and in him all things hold together (Colossians 1:17).

The brain’s efficiency with energy puts GEM to shame. Our brain only requires 20 watts, while the power of GEM’s brain, located in data centers, requires gigawatts. And whereas Google® and other data services are building a nuclear power plant near Nashville, Tennessee, our brain needs only completely renewable sugar.

So enriched uranium for GEM and an apple for us, or if you prefer, as I do, M&M®’s (with peanuts)!

Comparing my brain with GEM’s, I declare myself the victor! However, one scientist recently wrote,AI is eventually going to be able to do everything that humans can, and that this will happen faster than we think.” And another scientist wrote, “I have a grant from the National Science Foundation whose central motivation is to develop new computers that can run on sugar, just like our brains do. So, even this energy limitation of AI systems will likely be gone very soon.”

Oh no, with current tariffs on chocolate, the price of M&M’s (with peanuts) has skyrocketed. Now imagine the cost of M&M’s once GEM (and her many friends) develop a chocolate addiction!

Certainly, the end of time!
