Guardian Angels in the Psalms

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We find angels mentioned in the Psalms about 15 times (either directly or by my inference). Two of my favorite verses are. . .

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them (Psalm 34:7, ESV).

and

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways (Psalm 91:11).

The colloquial term “guardian angels” that we use in comforting children who wake up with nightmares in the middle of the night — and really with anyone in potential danger — has Biblical support. So does the message in Amy Grant’s video (poor quality because it’s old) Angels Watching Over Me. And the somewhat better-quality video in Carrie Underwood’s Jesus Take the Wheel.

I take comfort in angels sent to help us, and though Scripture doesn’t say exactly that we have a personal guardian angel, the verses in Psalm 34 and Psalm 91, along with Hebrews 1:14, do indicate God’s care in our personal lives through angels. . .

Are they [angels] not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? (Hebrews 1:14)

As we consider “guardian angels,” let’s be careful to note who qualifies. Psalm 34 says, “those who fear Him.” Psalm 91 has the context of “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High.” And Hebrews teaches, “Those who are to inherit salvation.”

The angels of God go before and after those who seek Him. As we follow God’s will, the Lord helps with His angels’ delivering messages and providing security.

When I was a child, I often woke up with nightmares, and my mother placed a small, framed copy of this painting on the wall next to my bed. I remember waking up and looking at the painting (I slept with a light on) to find comfort.

God works through angels and us, often in a joint venture, to accomplish His will.

When we get to heaven and view heaven’s equivalent of a Ring™ doorbell, seeing everything, both physical and spiritual, that happened in our lives on earth, we will offer praise to God and owe many, many, many (and with me, many more) angels a huge “Thank you!”

Luke 16:22a indicates the role of angels in our passing from time to eternity: “The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.”

A few days ago, I visited my cousin George. He’s a veteran and now living at the Veteran’s Hospice in Dayton, Ohio. When I left, George said, “You know very soon I will see the Lord!”

Yes, amen, carried to God’s presence — probably — by his guardian angel!

And in heaven, I will see George again.
