Barbara and I were watching an Australian comedy sitcom when a central character in the show, lying in a hospital bed with family standing around, and with everyone thinking that he would be okay. . .
. . . suddenly dies of a heart attack.
The camera angles began showing the faces of those standing in the hospital room, while in the background, a song began to play. It was an older and wizened singer, accompanied by background singers — all a cappella.
I turned to my wife and said, “This song is amazing. I’ve never heard it before, have you?” Barbara had not heard of the song, and so after the show I “AI’d” it and learned that it was written and sung by Paul Kelly, a 70-year-old singer from Australia.
In an interview, Kelly said that the song is a fusion of two passages of Scripture to create a sense of assurance in God’s love and provision. . .
We who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:17, ESV).
And. . .
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever (Psalm 23).
The song interweaves “meet me in the middle of the air” (1 Thessalonians 4:17) as the chorus after Paul Kelly sings each verse of Psalm 23. After listening to this song again and again, every time, I find peace, especially considering all our futures.
Enough of my prattle, please listen to Meet Me in the Middle of the Air.
