Psalms on Saturday ~ Psalm 107

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Have you ever cried out, “Lord, help!” If you have, Psalm 107 has the answer — and, please — remember this psalm as we will all at some point plead, “Lord, help!” There are five “help-needed” situations described in Psalm 107:

  1. When we are lost and confused.

Some wandered in the wilderness, lost and homeless. Hungry and thirsty, they nearly died (vv. 4-5, NLT).

It’s easy to feel lost and confused, without clear direction, and our resources are slim. What should we do?

Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress. He led them straight to safety (vv. 6-7a).

  1. When we lose our freedom.

Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery (v. 10).

The spiritual plague of our culture is despair and anxiety. Have we been taken captive by fear? What should we do?

Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress (v. 13).

  1. We lose our health.

Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins. They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door (vv. 17-18).

This is a great promise, even when our health problems result from our foolish habits, wayward diets, and lack of exercise. Knowing the God of grace and mercy, what should we do?

Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death (vv. 19-20).

  1. When we lose hope.

They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end (v. 27).

Have we been at “wit’s end”, having tried everything to find relief, giving up, with no solution? What should we do?

Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. What a blessing was that stillness (vv. 28-30a).

  1. When we lose our possessions, money, or even our home.

He changes rivers into deserts, and springs of water into dry, thirsty land. He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands, because of the wickedness of those who live there (vv. 33-34).

How devastating, our lives at one time showing so much promise, and now a wasteland. With our shambled lives, what should we do? No, don’t complain, but stand in faith and sing …

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble (vv. 1-2, ESV).

In the Hebrew Bible, the word “redeemed” means “a great deliverance.” Let’s remember this as the Lord’s intention for all our trials.

Let’s conclude this Psalms on Saturday with a song by Josh Baldwin singing Let the Redeemed Say So! which was inspired by Psalm 107. Just click the link.

Lord, help! Amen. Peace out.
