Let me give you some further advice: Be careful, for writing books is endless, and much study wears you out (Ecclesiastes 12:12, NLT).
Below are ten things that you know (or should know) and ten deeper facts (that you might not know) about the same topic. So, 20 facts. How many do you know?
- Did know: The Bible has both the Old and New Testaments. Didn’t know: The Bible wasn’t written as the Old and New Testaments, but was first called the Old and New by Christians in the late second century A.D., to keep from being confused.
- Did know: The first five books of the Bible are also known as the Pentateuch (meaning five books) to most Christians. Didn’t know: The Jews know these same five books as the Torah.
- Did know: There are 150 Psalms. Didn’t know: The early Jews structured the Psalms into five sections to mirror their Torah (five books).
- Did know: The Old Testament contains Major and Minor Prophets. Didn’t know: They are called “minor” because of their length, not their importance.
- Did know: The Book of Daniel is a prophetic book. Didn’t know: But is it a major or minor prophet? Answer: Major! Why? It’s 12 chapters long.
- Did know: There are four Gospels. Didn’t know: Only two were written by the original twelve apostles. Which two Gospels weren’t written by the Apostles?
- Did know: Luke wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. Didn’t know: Luke was a physician and the only Gentile to write books of the Bible.
- Did know: The Bible is inspired. Didn’t know: The Greek word for “inspired” literally means “God-breathed.”
- Did or Didn’t know: Is it the “Book of Revelation” or the “Book of Revelations”? Answer: Revelation, Revelation, Revelation — I keep noticing Facebook® and TikTok® users saying “Revelations” and as my New Testament professor used to say, “If someone doesn’t know the name of the Book of Revelation, he/she doesn’t have a right to say anything about the end times.”
- Did know: There are 27 books of the New Testament. Didn’t know: A letter written by biblical scholar Athanasius in 357 A.D. mentioning all 27 books was the first mention known in history of the entire list.
Bonus Questions:
- Did know: Pastor Grant quotes the Book of James many times in Interruptions. Didn’t know: Martin Luther called James an “Epistle of Straw” because the emphasis on works in James could seem to contradict his teaching about salvation by “grace alone.” Further pondering: One of the rare historical instances where Pastor Grant (the OG) knows more than Martin Luther!
- Did know: The “Great Commission” by Jesus in Matthew 28:19 is “Go and make disciples of all nations.” Didn’t know: What is known as the “Great Commandment” is found in Mark 12:30 when Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
A fitting way to end this Did & Didn’t Know test: Let’s “to do” with discipling others and let’s “to be” by loving God completely.
