The Bible’s Six-Seven

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Dictionary.com lists “six-seven” as the word of the year in 2025. The word, now known by everybody, creates a cacophony of groans with those under 18 years old when used by those over 18.

We might say we know of the word “six-seven,” but no one yet has defined it, and since those over 18 now know of the word, those under 18 will soon forsake it and then roll their eyes when it’s uttered by those over 18 in the future.

It takes the energy of youth to stay cool, so the rest of us should just give up.

However, I’ve just made a discovery. To be honest, my wife made the discovery, but I’m claiming it. She said to me yesterday, “Did you realize that ‘six-seven’ is in the Bible?” First, I made sure she wasn’t videoing me to later play to my grandkids, then I bit, “It can’t be in the Bible.”

Then she read to me Proverbs 6:16…

There are six things that the Lord hates; seven that are an abomination to Him.

Wow, I know something my grandkids don’t know, and probably you as well. Proverbs 6:17-19 lists the Bible’s “six-seven” list of detestable things…

  1. Haughty eyes
  2. A lying tongue
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood
  4. A heart that devises wicked plans
  5. Feet that make haste running to evil
  6. A false witness who lies, and
  7. One who sows discord

My son-in-law coaches my grandson’s seventh-grade basketball team, and every time they forget to raise their hands on defense, he shouts, “Six-Seven.” The members of the team hate it because it’s annoying, but they still raise their hands, and those over 18 years old in the stands, including parents and grandparents, erroneously think it’s cool to be included in the secret ways and thought processes of their children and grandchildren.

Soon, I think the stands will begin shouting, “Six-Seven!” The team will then begin losing games, and my son-in-law will be fired as a coach. Such are the vicissitudes of “six-seven.” Let’s consider the “six-seven” prohibitions again in Proverbs 6…

  1. Haughty eyes
  2. A lying tongue
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood
  4. A heart that devises wicked plans
  5. Feet that make haste running to evil
  6. A false witness who lies, and
  7. One who sows discord

Whereas “six-seven” has no definition in culture, the Bible’s list indicates sinful behavior. Let me give the OGV (Old Guy Version*) of Proverbs 6:17-19…

  1. I’m better than you
  2. It’s not okay to twist the truth for personal gain
  3. Gossip and slander are just as bad as murder
  4. Thinking of ways to take advantage of others
  5. Excitement and addiction to the illicit
  6. I will say what you want to hear
  7. I’ll say and do what’s needed to gain control over you

Both the Bible’s and my “six-seven” lists should be avoided. And I promise to never write another blog about “six-seven.”

*The Old Guy Version is my version; don’t roll your eyes.
