And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12, ESV).
The Greek word for salvation is “sozo” (long “o” sound for both 0’s), and it means “totally made well”. I love this translation of Hebrews 7:25 in the New International Version…
Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
Understanding the concept of salvation from the New Testament, note a progression from spirit to soul (mind, will, and emotions). We are saved totally with our spirit, and this salvation then begins to impact our mind (the way we think), our will (the way we act), and our emotions (the way we feel).
Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls (James 1:21, NASB1995).
Review: Total salvation in spirit by God’s Spirit (justification) progressing to a restoration of mind, will, and emotions (sanctification).
Also, this “complete” healing works on our body too. From spirit to soul (mind, will, and emotions) to health for our bodies. We read this amazing verse about the ministry of Jesus in Mark 6:56…
Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured (NASB1995, emphasis added).
The word “cured” can also be translated “made whole” or “healed,” and in the Greek is the word — understand this — the word is “saved.” HHHHMMMHHM. The Greek word “saved” also means “healed”. We see the same construct with “saved” translated as “the sick person well” in James 5:15…
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up (NIV).
Review: Total salvation spiritually with a progression to psychological and even physical health.
The Biblical word for salvation (sozo) in the New Testament implies healing for spirit, soul, and body. And now we come to our questions and doubts. As we pray for some to get saved and they don’t; for others to be at peace overcoming depression and they struggle; and prayers for the sick to be healed without our expected result.
I can’t answer these questions. But let’s consider this verse…
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life (Romans 5:10, ESV).
Let me give an OG (Old Guy … that’s me) translation…
If when we were deliberately forsaking God, He still sent His son to restore us, how much more shall we be saved (spirit, soul, and body) by His life!!
There is always a gap between the superlative promises inherent in the word “sozo” and our experiences, but I choose to live in faith, believing that God can at any time in my life and through my prayers release His power for complete healing, not only spiritually but also emotionally and physically.
I pray in faith; how about you? I desire the fullness of salvation.
