Living Your Life Hoping It Is Over?

Have you ever thought, “I wish this day was over”?

How about: “When I get out of college…, When I get this car paid…, When my children get older…”?

Are you living your life waiting to retire?

Add today, because you don’t feel good, and tomorrow, with a huge bill due – that’s two days of your life hoped away. Now, add four years for college to be done and 30 years to pay off your house. Young parents with babies can’t wait to sleep through the night. Two or three decades till retirement.

Your life calculator indicates that you have hoped away your days. Every day is a gift from God and most days you hoped that “today” was another day.

Jesus said, “Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will take care of itself, each day has enough difficulty of its own.” (Matthew 6:34)

The Apostle Paul writes, “I have learned the secret of being content.” (Philippians 4:11)

Can you live just today?

You only get today; this moment. If you hope it away or wish it to be another day, then you can’t enjoy today. Time is the now given to you from God. Theologically, God calls Himself “I Am!” God is now.

Certainly, God means for you to enjoy His gift now! You honor God and reflect His image when you live for today.

Joy can’t be found in the past since you aren’t there, and also joy can’t be found in the future since you aren’t there either. Joy can be found right now. Hoping for joy tomorrow evaporates it.

Yesterday, I officiated a wedding. I suggested to the father of the bride:

When you walk your daughter down the aisle to be married, do not think of her as a young girl. Do not think of her future either. Don’t consider how you will pay for the wedding.

Think: I’m walking my daughter down the aisle to be married. Stay in the moment. It is one of the most important days of your life.

I have trouble staying in the moment. I often believe that I can change the future if I just worry about it more.

I love reading about the life of Corrie Ten Boom. Early in Corrie’s life she asked her father a very complicated question about sex. Corrie and her father were standing on a platform waiting to board a train.

Between them was a large suitcase. Her father asked her to pick up the suitcase. Corrie looked at it and said, “I can’t. I’m not big enough.” Her father said, “It is the same with your question. Some day you will be big enough to understand the answer to your question. Until then you have to allow me to carry it for you.”

Questions are the reason we have difficulty living now. Considerations about the past and worry about the future. God will give the answers soon.

Until then, enjoy today.
