Calling Gives Peace

Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him.  1 Corinthians 7:17

Peace comes with calling.

If you don’t have peace, ask the question, “Am I walking in my calling?”

The Greek word for “calling” has an inference of “invitation.” Moses received an invitation through a burning bush to set God’s people free. Paul received an invitation through a bright light to become an apostle to the Gentiles. Peter received an invitation to feed the sheep of the Kingdom while talking to Jesus around a charcoal fire.

Your invitation might come in a more subtle way.

Calling is God’s assignment for you. Yes, before Jesus created the universe, He was thinking of you. His thoughts:

(Insert your name) will be a part of my church in 2021. There will be a lot going on in the next few years in preparation for my return. I need (insert your name) to do this. This is my assignment. I will give (insert your name) the ability and resources to accomplish this assignment.

God gives you an assignment. It’s His calling. He reveals this assignment through an invitation. Have you received the invitation?

Os Guinness writes in his book The Call

Deep in our hearts, we all want to find and fulfill a purpose bigger than ourselves. Only such a larger purpose can inspire us to heights we know we could never reach on our own.

How can you possibly have peace if you have no idea if your life is meaningful?

Jesus taught that you could gain the whole world and yet lose your soul. I’ve watched paupers and millionaires anesthetize their lives with alcohol because they saw no purpose calling them higher.

The key to calling is peace. Throughout my life, God has sent me invitations. I could say “yes” or “no” but when I said “yes” I found peace.

There are two opposite but equal errors with peace. First, running ahead of God – not learning to wait. Second, not obeying. Both take away peace. Ask yourself this question about an invitation to give or be involved:

Does this give or take away peace?

Consider all that you are doing right now.  Write down the five most important endeavors taking your time. After each item ask…

Does this give or take away peace?

God has a calling for your life.

You don’t have to toil to exhaustion to find God’s will – He will send you an invitation. You will obey or not obey and find peace or not find peace. And when you obey, you can stop and lose peace, or run ahead of God and lose peace.

Peace!
