Paintings and Photographs

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God (1 Peter 4:10, NASB1995).

Barbara and I have traveled dozens of times abroad for missions and adventures.

During these trips, she takes photographs and often paints a picture from one of these photographs. For years, she’s framed and displayed these photos and paintings for art shows, then stored them in her art room at our house.

Recently, I moved into a new office, and there was a long and dull hallway outside my door, so I thought, “Why don’t I make it more interesting by displaying Barbara’s paintings and photographs?”

I now have 16 pieces of my wife’s artwork hanging in the hallway outside my door (I didn’t ask the owners if I could do this, since they are my daughters and son). If you visit, I have a sheet of paper entitled “Barbara’s Curated Wall” which explains the context of each painting.

I’m sharing five of these paintings with explanations below…

Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood

My wife and I have visited St. Petersburg, Russia, many times. On a canal in the downtown area, you will find an onion-domed church. Tsar Alexander II was assassinated by a bomb thrown on March 13, 1881. He died outside his carriage, and on the street where he spilled his blood, the Russians erected this church named literally — Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood.

Watermelons

I love watermelons, and you can’t help but want to eat a slice of watermelon after seeing this photograph. This is a fruit stand outside General Santos City in the Philippines, which we often visit while working with Naomi’s Heart Mission.

Man Eating Lugaw

When traveling with a ministry team at Naomi’s Heart Mission, the team cooks large pots of lugaw (a Filipino porridge) to feed the hungry. Barbara took a photo, then painted this elderly man eating lugaw from a bowl. As she explains, “There was just something about the man’s face.”

A Street in Prague

Traveling to Belarus for discipleship conferences, Barbara and I would fly in and out through Prague and, on the way out of Belarus, spend a few days in the city. We love this city, taking long walks in the morning, afternoon, and evening, often clocking 20 to 30 thousand steps a day on my wife’s Fitbit®.

Making Cloth

While leading a team to the Holy Land, the team visited Nazareth, Jesus’ childhood hometown, and came across a woman weaving cloth on a weaver’s loom exactly as in the first century. Barbara took a photo and then painted the scene.

My wife and I appreciate you for reading Interruptions and supporting our ministry at www.grantedwardsauthor.com
